Sample 1 — Make common configurations easy

I designed a configuration wizard that turned a commonly-performed, yet very opaque task into a mostly-automated process requiring just a few clicks to complete. I focused on the simplest (and most frequent) scenario and optimized the wizard for that particular use case.

A process that previously involved multiple dialogs and many decision points now had a clear linear flow and a single point of interaction. Furthermore, I used common default values for most of the settings so that users could just click "Next" through the wizard and end up with something that worked.

Sample 2 — Add features while reducing complexity

The goal of this project was to introduce some advanced functionality to an existing tabular data viewer. My aim was make this new functionality obvious and familiar without adding complexity to the data viewer interface. The end result was a tabbed dialog that contained the different types of settings.

Having one dialog for all settings allowed the interface that it was launched from to remain uncluttered, while the tabs segmented the settings into reasonably-sized cognitive "chunks". I created many mockups that were used to facilitate discussion about the design and also ended up serving as reference designs for the developers who built it.

Sample 3 — Don't make me think!

The product I was working on was very powerful and offered a lot of different options to configure. However, the options that were used frequently were jumbled together with the ones that almost nobody changed.

I designed a simplified configuration dialog that presented only the most common configuration options. It also had a button that would toggle the simple view with the advanced view, so that experienced users could still do advanced customization.

Sample 4 — First impressions matter

These are design sketches and mockups of a Welcome Screen that I created to help new users get acquainted and feel comfortable with the product. I designed two different welcome screens for two similar products.

I wanted to highlight the different features of each product, yet retain a unified feel. I began with the content and organization and then built up the visual style with the help of a visual designer.
